5. Measurement Tools

Measure stone pieces accurately using your phone's camera, AR technology, or manual entry.

5.1 Choosing a Measurement Method

Remnant Finder offers multiple ways to measure stone pieces. When you start a measurement, you will be asked to choose your method:

Method Requirements Best For
AR Measurement iPhone with LiDAR sensor Highest accuracy without tools
Photo-Based Any phone camera Quick estimates with a reference object
Manual Entry Tape measure Exact measurements when you have tools

5.2 AR Measurement (iOS)

Available on iPhones with LiDAR (iPhone 12 Pro and newer).

How to Measure

  1. Select AR Measurement from the method picker.
  2. Point your camera at the stone piece.
  3. Slowly move your phone to scan the surface.
  4. Tap the starting point of the edge you want to measure.
  5. Move to the end point and tap again.
  6. The measurement appears on screen.
  7. Repeat for width and thickness.
  8. Tap Done to save the measurements.

Tips for AR Accuracy

  • Hold your phone 12-24 inches from the piece.
  • Move slowly and steadily while scanning.
  • Ensure good lighting — avoid harsh shadows.
  • Measure on a flat, stable surface.
  • Take multiple measurements and average them for best results.

5.3 Photo-Based Measurement

Works on any phone with a camera.

How to Measure

  1. Select Photo-Based Measurement.
  2. Place a reference object next to the stone piece (see 5.5 Reference Objects).
  3. Take a photo from directly above (bird's-eye view).
  4. The app detects the reference object and calculates the scale.
  5. Tap the edges of the stone piece to define its boundaries.
  6. Measurements are calculated based on the reference object's known size.

Tips for Photo Accuracy

  • Shoot from directly above — angle distortion reduces accuracy.
  • Use a well-known reference object (credit card, standard ruler).
  • Keep the piece and reference on the same flat surface.
  • Ensure even lighting across the entire piece.

5.4 Manual Measurement

For users who prefer traditional measuring tools.

How to Enter Measurements

  1. Select Manual Entry.
  2. Enter the dimensions:
  3. Length — Longest side
  4. Width — Shorter side
  5. Thickness — Depth of the slab
  6. Choose your unit (inches or centimeters).
  7. Tap Save.

Dimensions support fractional values (e.g., 48 1/2", 24 3/4").

5.5 Using Reference Objects

When using Photo-Based Measurement, a reference object of known size helps the app calculate accurate dimensions.

Supported Reference Objects

Object Known Size
Credit/Debit Card 3.375" x 2.125" (85.6 x 53.98 mm)
US Dollar Bill 6.14" x 2.61" (156.1 x 66.3 mm)
Standard Ruler 12" (305 mm)
A4 Paper Sheet 8.27" x 11.69" (210 x 297 mm)
Letter Paper 8.5" x 11" (216 x 279 mm)

How to Use

  1. Place the reference object flat next to the piece.
  2. Ensure it is fully visible in the photo.
  3. Select the matching object type in the app.
  4. The app auto-detects the object and establishes the scale.

5.6 Accuracy Tips

Factor Recommendation
Lighting Even, diffused light; avoid direct sunlight and shadows
Angle Shoot perpendicular (90 degrees) to the surface
Distance Keep consistent distance; follow on-screen guidance
Surface Flat, level surface; clean piece edges
Multiple Readings Take 2-3 measurements and compare
Verification Cross-check with a tape measure for critical projects

Note: AR and Photo-Based measurements are estimates. For projects requiring exact specifications, always verify with traditional measuring tools.
